Remember the days of growing up and longing to feel a sense of belonging? Jessi Vance does. As the daughter of missionary parents, Jessi was an American living in Uzbekistan where she studied dance and dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. As a non-native, she often felt that she didn’t quite fit in the culture of Uzbekistan. As a young woman living abroad, she felt different than other kids her age in America. Living between two countries magnified her need to feel a sense of identity.
Jessi graduated and left Uzbekistan for New York City but her heart for kids living abroad – and experiencing the same challenges she faced when growing up – inspired her to launch Kaleidoscope, a non-profit that serves the needs of children of diplomats, military personnel and missionaries living abroad.
Today Jessi leads a U.S.-based team and travels the world leading teams of “Kaleiders” who work with “third culture kids” to develop a sense of identity and belonging wherever they are in the world.
In this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling Christian business podcast Jessi talks about:
- Helping others find identity and belonging
- Leading teams who feel valued, loved and heard
- Developing kids into world-changing leaders
Although Jessi’s work is unique, her insights about loving well as a leader provide practical advice that anyone can use to bring kingdom values into the workplace.

Have you ever felt trapped and miserable in your job, even a job you once dreamed of, and unsure of how you could change course? My guest on this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling podcast, filmmaker Jon Cortizo, certainly has.
Several years ago Jon was living the life he dreamed of since he was a kid. He had a job working in production on Hollywood films and top television shows. But the grind of working 14 to 15 hour days left Jon feeling isolated and burned out at a young age. As Jon says, “I sounded like a grumpy old man at 22.”
At one point Jon was so miserable in what had once been his dream job that he was close to contemplating suicide. But a chance visit from his sister and the support of a church community helped Jon discover a new dream for his career.
In this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling podcast Jon talks about the influences that helped him re-shape his perspective on ambition, competition, and calling. Jon talks about the importance of a church community and how using his passion and gifting for filmmaking to serve in his local church gave him a fresh perspective on his career. He discusses how he discovered that he could use his gifting to make a positive impact in people’s lives and serve God.
In this episode Jon discusses:
- How a failed first business helped him create a more successful second one
- The high price of an unhealthy view of competition
- How biblical principles apply to work and career today
- How he redefines success today

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to turn something that you’re passionate about into a business, career, or ministry? My guest in this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling Christian business podcast has. In this episode you’ll meet Stephanie Shelow, Founder of Dessert Tours NYC.
A few years ago Stephanie was working in full-time vocational ministry at a megachurch in Florida when she felt God call her to New York City. She knew leaving Florida meant leaving ministry and taking a leap of faith into a new career… even though she had no idea what that career would be.
As Stephanie explored New York, praying that God would reveal her next step to her, she had no idea that He already had. An avid baker since she was young, Stephanie spent hours exploring some of the city’s best dessert spots from world-famous bakeries to small, out-of the-way finds.
It was through talking about her passion for desserts with friends and a community group of entrepreneurs at her local church in New York that Stephanie discovered that the purpose she was looking for had been under her nose the entire time.
In this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling podcast Stephanie talks about how she overcame challenges in launching and growing her business.
In this episode Stephanie also talks about:
- How she discovered her calling almost by accident
- Wondering if her idea was “serious” enough to glorify God and serve the kingdom
- The importance of friends and an entrepreneurial community that helped her discover and refine her vision
- How embracing her own authenticity helped her find joy in her calling
- What ministry looks like now
If you’ve ever thought about turning your passion into a purpose (and profits) then Stephanie’s story is sure to inspire you.
